Photo by @ErikaSkogg // Johan, a senior in high school, heats the family sauna on a sub-zero degree day in the the Keweenaw Peninsula, the northernmost part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The tradition of sauna not only keeps the Finnish-American culture alive in Upper Michigan, but it celebrates an ancient relationship between family, neighbors, and nature. To sauna here is a part of every day life as more people of Finnish descent live in the northwest part of the Upper Peninsula than anywhere else in the world outside of Finland. A traditional Finnish smoke sauna (savusauna) can also be seen in the background of the property. #AtlanticMine #UpperMichigan #ScandinavianAmerican
