This is the Hutchison Memorial Hut, one of more than 100 rustic shelters scattered throughout England, Wales and #Scotland that are left unlocked and free to use by outdoor #adventurers. The buildings, called #bothies, are an indispensable element of British hill culture, and a majority of them have been salvaged from various states of disrepair. #nytimes reporter and photographer @sahiltner hiked some 200 miles visiting 20 of the sites. “In all their understated glory, bothies allow for prolonged access to Britain’s rugged, restorative and majestical hidden corners, places that might otherwise prove unforgiving or impractical as day-hike destinations for the casual explorer,” he writes. Some longtime fans fear that bothy culture is at risk. Map coordinates for the often hard-to-find dwellings, once dispersed only among hiking insiders, are now available openly on the internet. And popular hashtags have created something of a buzz on @Instagram. @sahiltner shot this photo in @visitcairngorms. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
