As the world's largest bird—it can stand up to 9 feet tall and weigh 280 pounds—the ostrich (Struthio camelus) is also one of the most adaptable. This flightless bird lives in a variety of environments in southwest Africa and has developed a complex social structure. An ostrich will attack only if threatened, and then it can kick hard enough to kill a lion. To lure intruders from a nest, a male will perform a "distraction display" while the well-camouflaged chicks run for cover. You can see a protective ostrich hovering over its eggs to scare away approaching warthogs in one of the dioramas in the Museum’s Akeley Hall of African Mammals.
