Meet the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena)! Neither a cat or a dog, the hyena belongs in its own family, Hyaenidae. Its closest relatives include the meerkat and the mongoose. This scavenger is native to parts of Africa, the Middle East, and India, inhabiting savannas, scrublands and semi deserts. While it prefers to eat carrion, it also supplements its diet with fruits, seeds, and leaves.
