I would like to share insight about Bromo, a photograph of mystical chance…I was working on the @ナショナルジオグラフィック story, Volcano Gods, and knew the most spiritual Mt Bromo had to be included in the visual narrative. For 3 days during a Kasada ceremony I photographed this earthliness from various angles, wanting to avoid the often photographed location called the overlook. Kasada’s occur on a complicated Javanese calendar system, when the moon is full and layers of spirituality are just right.

On the final day in Bromo I gave into reluctance, went to the overlook and began photographing about 11pm. It was a cloudless night. Each exposure was 1hr, imagining a touch movement of the earth’s rotation without many swirling stars. By around 5am I had taken only 6 photographs. None felt right.

As life and the universe would be, at about 5am the sun began a quiet glow. The moon, still full, had arced to the horizon. I knew, although not clearly, the exposure was no longer an hour, guessing it had to be shorter. Still alone, at peace, without much thinking, I pressed the camera remote, counting to around 120 secs.

Back in studio I began editing, astonished by the gift Mt Bromo and its spiritual cousin, Mt Semeru, had given...one frame.

When Bromo was published in NatGeo, I received emails from readers asking how I photographed this ubiquitous landscape differently, sending their own images of these volcanoes. It was very sweet and I would respond in kind…”Thank you for sharing but please, try not replicating what has been done. Approach in a way we’ve never seen before. Remember, in all the history that was, in all the history to come, moments never repeat. That is the beauty of time, the earth, our insignificant human existence”.
