The World at Night project
Above Half Dome and El Capitan rock formations a bright meteor streaks across Yosemite sky with backdrop of the Pleiades star cluster, the Seven Sisters. Next week on Thursday night Dec 13-14th the yearʼs best meteor shower happens, the Geminids, visible from both hemispheres. The show begins in late evening when constellation Gemini rises. It becomes better near midnight, specially when the moon sets. The meteors will appear anywhere in the sky and not only around Gemini. Find clear sky and a dark place away from light pollution with rather open horizon. You might be lucky to be near one of the designated dark sky parks (darksky.org/parks). Expect an average of 1-2 meteors per minute during the peak and some would be strikingly bright that are called fireballs. Enjoy!
