I’m thankful I live in a place where all four seasons run its course. And I’m thankful for the winter season. It gets cold, bitterly cold, there’s ice and shorter days, it requires a bit of grit to face the elements. But it also cleanses the earth from an over abundance of pestilence when summer arrives. Animals hibernate and catch up on much needed rest, there is an overall slowing down of pace, and the wonder of snow canopies the horizon so beautifully. Do you ever find the parallels between what is happening in nature and within our own lives? I’ve always resonated with seasons in this way. For me, winter is where the things of old shed. Sometimes it feels like a death of sorts. There is a melancholy that happens too, seeing the beauty of colorful leaves and flower blooms no longer. At first glance it seems like we’re losing good things and we forget that nothing is actually lost, because the things that seem to have withered away are the very things creating compost for a richer soil, making roots healthy and strengthening foundations so that when spring awakens us back to life, the blooms are even more lush and the leaves vibrant as ever. Bare branches do not indicate lack or loss but rather a preparation of something wondrous ahead. Winter grows our faith and patience. It helps us embrace stillness from noise. And it also delights our soul with magical lights, snowflakes and cozying up to what truly matters at the heart of life, of living. And for that, I’m thankful and welcome its solstice headed our way.
