The hand of Akumaa Mama Zimbi is surrounded by those of the members of the Association of Widows in Hikpo, reaching into a bag of palm-oil tree seeds. In Ghana, Akumaa Mama Zimbi is a public figure committed to fighting for women’s rights, on television and also on the radio and in films.

Launched in 2007 by the Mama Zimbi Foundation (MZF), the Widows Alliance Network (WANE) liberates Ghanaian widows from their social, cultural and economic hardships. 300 groups have been formed to provide vocational training in reproductive health, agriculture, sewing and beekeeping. Thanks to WANE, these widows have been able to become agents of environmental progress and sexual and reproductive health within their ten communities and cities in Ghana.
