Photo by @MichaelGeorge // Zoo veterinarians do not have an easy job. Imagine trying to help patients that can’t tell you what’s wrong. These vets rely on the keen observations of zookeepers to notice when animal behavior hints that something might be hurting or infected. You might be surprised to learn that every single animal at the zoo gets to see the vet for check ups. From the large mammals, to the small amphibians and insects. In this image, Bulldawg the Bullfrog, is being seen by Dr. Bogan at the Central Florida Zoo. The vet is checking the frog’s heart rate during an annual exam. Part of the exam (not pictured) is to draw blood to test for calcium levels, and other signs of a healthy frog. They care about the levels of calcium because UV light is necessary for Vitamin D which is necessary for the absorption of calcium. By checking these levels, the vet staff can ensure Bulldawg is getting an ample amount of UV.
