Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Red deer stags in a blizzard – I’ve been sending off a load of hi-res files today to a magazine that is doing a feature on my work. One of the images that they chose from my website is this one, an image that I’ve always really liked but somehow I never feel like I’ve been able to process it properly. Past attempts have always rendered it flat and lifeless but to be fair when I did originally shoot this image I did underexpose it accidentally. That was in the days before I realised the importance and usefulness of the histogram but I don’t really want to bang on about that again today. Rather I want to restate the importance of revisiting old RAW files and to look again at how the image might have been processed, something that is especially important with images which we ourselves consider to be significant. Whilst this rendition is in no way perfect or even a finished article it is definitely I think I significant improvement on my previous ham-fisted, borderline inept attempts. We all spend so much time investing in our photography, in learning about our cameras and lenses and getting to know our subjects that it just makes no sense to then make a half-arsed or ill-educated attempt at processing them later. Of course it’s important to maintain the complete integrity of the image and nothing has been added or removed from this, it’s not even been slightly cropped. What I have done however is to try and optimise it, to give it more vibrancy and the get the deer to pop a little bit more. To assist in this I used for virtually the very first time one of @photoshop new sliders, the Dehaze slider. I’ve always tended to avoid it’s next door neighbour, the clarity slider as I don’t like what it does to an image but this one seems to be have been quite useful with this particular image. Of course all this really means is that my processing backlog has just grown massively in length as I ponder all of my old images that could now do with a revisit.
