‘12 Hawks at 3 O’Clock’ was painted during a turbulent period in Joan Mitchell’s life, but one which gave rise to some of her best works.⠀

In the summer of 1960 – the year this painting was created – Mitchell was fighting with her lover, the artist Jean-Paul Riopelle, and her mother was diagnosed with cancer.⠀
