‪The Gambian epauletted fruit bat can be found almost anywhere in central and western Africa where fig, mango, guava, or banana trees are in fruit. Unlike most bats who rely on echolocation, this species uses sight and a keen sense of smell to find food. Gambian epauletted fruit bats are gardeners of the forest, acting as seed dispersers and pollinators for several species of flowering trees. Despite what we know about bats being important pollinators, they are typically ignored or feared by many people which can lead to conflict that threatens bat numbers.
