Crown is the most intense form of aurora, appearing overhead, when the lights change every second in color and shape. The experience of seeing this is far greater than any picture. They happen when a sudden massive flux of high energy charged particles from the sun (solar wind) arrive at our planet territory, creating a geomagnetic storm.
Once you are in polar latitudes anywhere with clear sky and away from city light with rather open horizon would be fine. Sometimes you have to wait until midnight to see a better display. Anytime from September to March is fine when the sky become dark enough in high latitudes. Learn more on my natgeo.com article “7 Magical Places to View Auroras” and follow me @babaktafreshi.
