This painting, a highlight of our Old Masters auction in New York, is one of her earliest works, created during her mid-to-late teens.⠀

Unlike other women painters in the 17th century, Ruysch’s career continued after her marriage and the birth of her ten children, fetching high prices during her lifetime.⠀

Rachel Ruysch (1664–1750), ‘A swag of grapes, hollyhocks, irises, mallow, African marigolds, clematis, a horse chestnut and blackberries with butterflies and other insects suspended before a stone arch’, 1681. Oil on canvas, 25 ⅞ x 20 in. (65.7 x 50.8 cm.). Estimate: $80,000–120,000.⠀
