Sisyphos, the King of Ephyra, was condemned by Hades to roll a huge boulder up a hill for eternity – since the boulder would roll back down as soon as he neared the top. ⠀

'This vase has been attributed to Kleophrades painter, one of the best red-figured vase painters of the late Archaic period Greece', says Hannah Solomon, our Antiquities specialist and Head of Sale. 'Here, he demonstrates his ability to paint in the earlier black-figured style'. ⠀

An Attic Black-Figured Neck-Amphora, attributed to the Kleophrades Painter, c 500 B.C. 16 ¼ in. (41.2 cm.) Estimate: $100,000-150,000.
