In 1758, 24-year-old Jean-Baptiste Le Prince travelled to Russia to seek his fortune. He later became popular for his genre paintings called ‘russeries’ – picturesque renderings of Russian subjects, settings and costumes.

Here, his ‘The Russian Dance’ and ‘The Seesaw’, offered as a pair in our Old Masters auction in New York, depicts a joyous Russian scene adapted to suit a contemporary French audience’s tastes.
