We are coming upon the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, and First Man, a new film out Oct. 12, captures the stoic nature and personal challenges of the legendary moon walker Neil Armstrong who led that mission. The triumph of First Man—based on the book by James R. Hansen and directed by Damien Chazelle with Ryan Gosling as Armstrong—is that it doesn’t just tell us the story of that mission, which we know very well, but the story of a man we barely know at all. It makes a bracing case for why Armstrong, a man who suffered long yet carried on, was the right person to lead us. In preparation of the anniversary, the @スミソニアン博物館 Institution has engaged a team of restoration scientists to stabilize and further preserve what might be the most celebrated suit of clothing ever made—Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit—for permanent display for the coming centuries. The little bit of lunar dirt that remains on Armstrong’s suit became trapped in its weave a very long time ago. It will remain there effectively forever—a mark not only of the remarkable thing the spacesuit was, but the remarkable things it did. Photograph by @marcogrob for TIME
