Florida Panhandle residents woke to scenes of devastation Thursday after Hurricane Michael tore a path through the coastal region. The Category 4 storm caused widespread destruction in the area, where some homes were washed away, destroyed or fully submerged in water. Damaged boats are seen here in Panama City, Fla. on Oct. 11. An insurance company that produces models for catastrophes is estimating Hurricane Michael caused about $8 billion in insured losses, according to the Associated Press. More than 900,000 homes and businesses across Florida, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas had no power as of Thursday morning, the Associated Press reported. Hurricane Michael moved into Georgia late Wednesday and was downgraded to a tropical storm. By Thursday morning, the storm was bringing heavy rain and 50 mph winds to parts of South Carolina and North Carolina. The death toll from Hurricane Michael has risen to 11 after five people were killed in Virginia Thursday – proving that it remained dangerous long after it made landfall.
