As a spitfire girl of 12 years old, Kajal (left) was determined to get an education and reinvent herself. “Without education, you will not know the right path to take,” she told us with gravity. From the time she was 8 years old, Kajal worked as a trash picker in nearby landfill, scavenging with her family to get by. Her refuge was the local @chintan.india school.
In the years after our coverage, Kajal left her family to escape an arranged marriage. Today she is happily married to a man she chose herself. She is raising a son and spends her evenings teaching English and Hindi to the children in her neighborhood.
