Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz A Giant Clam is harvested from a shallow water cache near a village in Tabiteuea. Filter-feeding Giant Clams live as long as 70 years, and are kept near a village as quasi-domestic animals that can feed an entire family in times of need. The shells, with a diameter over 70cm, are commonly used as pig troughs as well as baptismal altars.

Tabiteuea is an atoll in the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati, an island republic in Micronesia comprised of 33 coral atolls and isles stretching along the equator. With lagoons and white-sand beaches, many of its islands are uninhabited, offering a remote setting for fishing, diving and bird watching. To explore more of our world, follow @geosteinmetz
