An exceptional example of the important early #artworks by Iraqi #modern master Mahmoud Sabri, Jnazet encapsulates the artist’s political and social ideologies. The 1950s was an important period in Iraqi art history, when art became a tool to reflect the hardships of the poor and dispossessed. Sabri was crucial to the movement but due to his position as an outspoken dissident of the regime, he was forced into exile – living across London, Prague and Moscow. Here, the funeral ‘procession’ is harshly etched, jagged and symmetrical; an uplifted arm both appears to beat a drum and gesture in defiance. The facial features of the simplified figures are grimly set, and the bold yet austere colours typify the visual language of the artist’s anguish.
