Her decision means that Kavanaugh, who faces multiple accusations of sexual misconduct, is all but assured to be confirmed to the Supreme Court when the Senate votes this weekend. Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, said in a television interview on Friday that an op-ed written by Kavanaugh and published in the @Wall Street Journal the night prior had left him unconvinced that Donald Trump’s nominee was qualified for the court. In the op-ed, Kavanaugh wrote that he became “very emotional” during his testimony last week but said he was “hardworking” and “even-keeled.” Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said he understood that “this has to be a terrible ordeal” for Kavanaugh and his family, the Associated Press reports, but added: “The fire in his eyes when he turned into this partisan screed is something I’m not going to forget.” Photograph by @davidbutow—@reduxpictures for TIME
