Outskirts of Cúcuta, Colombia | Photo by @stephenedwardferry | Venezuelan migrants walk along the highway from Cúcuta to Pamplona en route to the interior of Colombia or to other countries farther south where they hope to find work. Extraordinary numbers of Venezuelans are emigrating, fleeing conditions of extreme poverty, widespread unemployment, lack of medical services, and political violence. Young men, families, women and children often arrive to Colombia as complete paupers, without even the equivalent of 5 US dollars in their pockets. They are walking the roads of Colombia radiating outwards from the many points of entry along the Venezuelan coast. Some walk for weeks to arrive at Colombian cities such as Bogotá and Medellín; others even try to cross over into Ecuador, some 1500 kilometers from the main point of entry in Cucutá, .
