Photo by @ljohnphoto for @rippleeffectimages. Maria Stella Nalumaga, a 12-year-old girl who dreams of being a radio journalist, is the Sanitation Prefect in her grade. She, along with other girls, is in charge of cleaning their latrines everyday. They do this with a great deal of enthusiasm and ownership. The latrines give the girls at the school a place to answer nature’s call in private and to manage menstruation. Without adequate sanitation facilities, worldwide many girls drop out of school upon reaching puberty.
Ripple Effect Images aid partner, @WaterAid, in collaboration with African Evangelistic Enterprise, is responsible for this vital facility. The helped build the latrines along with a rainwater catchment tank for an affordable and healthy water supply that also allows for better sanitation.
