My name is Sara Stygles and I’m a teacher in Hattiesburg, which is in rural South MS. We have close to 70% of our students under the poverty line. I teach 3rd grade math and science to 2 classes of 24 students. Of those students approximately 20 of them are English Language Learners (ELL). I have such a soft spot in my heart for the ELL population. In my classroom we have flexible seating, which I have largely funded myself. I also am constantly searching for grants to write to help cover the costs associated with providing my students more than just bare bones necessities. We are a poor state, and you’d be hard pressed to find a teacher at my school that doesn’t have a 2nd or even 3rd job to make ends meet. I’ve been teaching for 8 years, have a masters degree, and I’m working on a specialist degree.
