“Body Respect: What Conventional Health Books Get Wrong, Leave Out, and Just Plain Fail To Undertand about Weight” by #LindaBacon & #LucyAphramor # I need you to read this, and to consider it closely. Please. There are a number of ENORMOUSLY missing components from the way that we are taught about health in our society. For those of us seeking to improve our own mental, physical, and spiritual health to those of us that work in the health and fitness industry, and for people that are medical professionals...we have been fooled. All of us. # Understanding the Health At Every Size (#HAES) movement is absolutely imperative to creating a world where people can be their best, most whole and the healthiest versions of themselves. Learning about how we’ve been sold the absolute bullshit of how “obesity causes disease” and the ways that these lies prop up multi-billion dollar industries is essential. Without understanding this, we will continue to spew and justify fatphobic garbage, and we are absolutely complicit in the detriment of people’s physical, mental, and spiritual health as a result. I am not being hyperbolic. Even ost health professionals simply do not understand the ways that systemic oppression (of race, class, size, gender, etc) impacts the health of their clients/patients. For anyone who says that they care about the health and well-being of others, I implore you to learn about, think about, and implement these ideas into your practice. **continued in comments** # I can see the trolls lining up to give me the same tired arguments that I see tenfold when people of size post the same things that I do. So let me dissuade you real quick. I was a personal trainer for 10 years. I’ve written for Men’s Health and Men’s Fitness, have won a natural bodybuilding competition at 5.5% bodyfat, have deadlifted 576lb in competition and have been nationally ranked in the deadlift in 3 weight classes in a single year. And I STILL didn’t know about this stuff. If you care, do the work, and start learning. Please. # Google their peer-reviewed article “Weight Science: Evaluating the Evidence For A Paradigm Shift”. # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads #mcgreads
