SOUND, SET, etc.. In the past few seasons we have opted for no set whatsoever - preferring to only use the incredibly vast space of the Armory. There are a few reasons for this: The first is practical or rather economical. Building a set and having it be well executed is a luxury and quite an expensive one (I know first hand from the extraordinary sets we did at @louisvuitton to the incredibly impressive sets @marcjacobs over the years.) The second is that by not having a set, we kept the focus on the fashion - not the models, the set, or the celebrities attending the show. It never felt like a compromise and for me that was of huge importance. For our RUNWAY 9.12.18, I asked for a glass floor - large, luxurious and thick transparent glass tiles laid over the newly repurposed wood floors of the @parkavearmory which stretches from Park to Lexington. The width needed to accommodate 2 rows of plexiglass chairs on either side of the runway. As for our 'wish' for an impressive wall of thick glass brick inspired by 80’s loft spaces. @stefanbeckman designed an amazing, meticulously executed curved glass wall that served not only as a device for the models to pass through into the armory but also a perfect texture, environment and backdrop for the fashion to be photographed against. Glass slippers on a glass floor in a sturdy and fragile space. Now, what sound? That, I trust always and completely to the incredible knowledge and talent of @steve__mackey. After Steve looks at the fitting photos and @kegrand and I explain the jist of where we are heading, Steve goes off and puts together a selection of music. What he thinks and feels always sounds right and heightens the emotional experience of watching the show. Often we start with a few different directions. The conversation leads to more music, sounds and ideas until ultimately we all agree on the perfect score for the show. In this case, a piece of Philip Glass' extraordinary and magical, "Rubric." Thank you Julie Mannion @kcdworldwide (production) and Joe Saint @imcdlighting (lighting) Video @1.800.newbold
