Photo by @andyparkinsonphoto | Mountain hare rolling – This was actually a surprisingly difficult image to capture, especially given that the hare really wasn’t that far away and I was comfortably set up. It was more to do with the unpredictable way that the hare actually rolls, twisting and turning on the ground, all the while kicking up spindrift that can cause the autofocus some confusion. Not only that but as it wriggles around on the ground it is the eye that is usually most critical to creating the important connection with the animal and also the part that photographers need to get in sharp focus. As the hare twists and wriggles then the head can become obscured or is simply difficult to maintain sharp focus on. Yet again of course the more experienced one is with animal behaviour, usually because of significant time already invested in their company, the better chance one has of being able to anticipate and plan for witnessing moments of behaviour like this. On this occasion I was lucky as the hare did at one point look directly at me whilst kicking its hind feet gleefully into the air. I might have preferred the backlighting to be a little softer but again, I decided to compromise detail in the highlights around the hare in order to illuminate its face enough that his character was able to shine through. If you’d like to join me in Feb-March 2019 in the Scottish mountains to experience these incredible creatures for yourself, at fantastically close quarters then please do email me at [email protected] for more details.
