Did you know that bilbies are ‘ecosystem engineers’? They disturb the soil by digging, nose poking, bull-dozing long tracts and building complex burrows. In doing this, they improve the soil health by turning it over and mixing in organic matter. Turning over the soil brings deep nutrient rich soil to the surface and traps organic matter, increasing nutrients for plants. Today bilbies are only found in small areas in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland. Taronga has established a 110-hectare breeding sanctuary for bilbies at @TarongaWesternPlainsZoo. Future generations of these bilbies will be released into Sturt National Park.
