Meet Naisimari. She is a business woman, a traditional beader, a manager of 72 people, a board member and a mother of four. Naisimari is one of the 1,300 women across northern Kenya using her skills to earn an income through the Northern Rangelands Trust's Beads for Wildlife program. “I love beading” she says. “With the income from my beadwork, my kids are comfortable and able to go to school. I also don’t need to sell goats for money anymore which means more milk for my family. But it’s not all about the money…it’s about your skill and production.” As a board member and resident of northern Kenya’s Westgate Conservancy, Naisimari has seen firsthand the benefits to both community and wildlife that the program has brought. “Before the establishment of the conservancy, Westgate was much poorer. People used to kill wildlife, we used to go years without seeing a single elephant, now we seen them every day.” In fact, since 2012, Northern Rangeland Trust’s conservancies have seen a 34% reduction in environmentally destructive charcoal making and African Elephants in Kenya have increased by around 1,000. Taronga is so proud to support this enterprise and sells Beads for Wildlife products at both our Zoos. When you buy a beaded item from us, you can be sure that the profits are going back to beaders like Naisimari, and are in turn benefiting the spectacular wildlife of northern Kenya. Find them in the Zoo shop or on our website.
