Happy World Lizard Day! We’re celebrating some of our favourite reptiles today and wanted to give a shout out to one of Taronga’s all-time lizard lovers, Dr Peter Harlow. Pete is currently on Monuriki Island in western Fiji, carrying out vital conservation work for the Fijian Crested Iguana. Twenty years ago, while conducting surveys on the Island, Pete identified that this species was near extinction. This population was declining because its habitat was being destroyed by goats and Pacific rats. In an effort to save the species, 21 Fijian crested iguanas were captured and transported to Kula Eco Park in Fiji for a breeding program. The goats and rats were then removed from the island and the vegetation rapidly recovered. In 2015, the first 32 captive-bred crested iguanas were returned to the island, and in February 2017, the last 38 captive-bred iguanas and all of the original founders were successfully released. Right now Pete is on island monitoring the survival rates of these lucky lizards – stay tuned for the results! And to see a gorgeous Fijian Crested Iguana for yourself, pop into Taronga’s reptile house ? #ForTheWild
