Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Red fox cub in forest habitat – I can understand of course that Instagram might not be the best platform for posting ‘small in the frame’ images but this image has been a recent favourite of mine from the last couple of years. Having been privileged to have been able to photograph fox cubs a few times in the past none of the locations lent themselves to this kind of expansive habitat shot. Given the beauty of this forest however it would have made no sense to have zoomed in solely on the fox and on the few occasions that I did so my personal feeling was that the closer I got the less I liked the resulting image. What I loved most about this site, now unfortunately lost to me, is that as the sun set its position on the distant horizon would create a completely transformed backdrop, moving as it does throughout every day of the year. Factor in as well the differing times that the foxes might emerge and therefore the images that I produced, though similar in content were always markedly different. Though the changeable lighting conditions in which I photographed my recent bear images meant that I primarily used aperture priority for these I committed stringently to manual, photographing only when the fox cub passed through a pool of sunlight. This then allowed the shadowed parts of the forest to fall into underexposure, thereby concentrating the viewers’ attention, hopefully (as you zoom in on your smartphones) on the little sunlit fox cub. The dot of blue that you see to the left of the fox is light from the other side of this small forest whereas the branches at top right were left in deliberately as there was just something about them that I liked.
