Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hares boxing – I captured this image last year when for the first time in my 17 year wildlife photographic career I was shooting exclusively on @canonuk cameras and lenses. I simply couldn’t have captured this image on anything else. I was shooting on the Canon 1DX MkII teamed with the ultra-versatile 200-400mm F4 lens as myself and my good mate @kevmorgans moved inconspicuously but purposefully, tracking the movements of these two hares as they ran and boxed and chased. In and out of the tussocky ground they would sprint, disappearing and then suddenly re-appearing some 50 yards away, covering the ground effortlessly and relentlessly. For us two it was much more of a challenge. In these moments the hares are completely consumed by their activity but we still had to be exceptionally careful, all the while our primary objective was not to interfere with this spectacular and explosive natural behaviour. We were both handholding but it was to be simply a case of luck as to who of Kev or I would get the window of opportunity if and when it did appear. In the moments before this explosive leap occurred both hares were tussling in the ground, the male trying not to take no for an answer, the female getting more and more decisive with her rejections! As I struggled to get a clear view, trying to the focussing point on the almost completely obscured bundle of fur the male suddenly levitated. The relentless @canonuk 1DX MkII was on it in a flash, even though the background provided ample distraction and contrast for it to be confused. It was having none of it and then the rocket-ship fired up, four razor sharp images before the hare even hit the ground. Tip for the day – get absolutely the best equipment that you can afford. 18 years of experience helped me get this image but the camera/lens did the rest! #followme at @andyparkinsonphoto @andyparkinsonphoto @thephotosociety @canonuk @kevmorgans
