Bike polo is bit like street hockey — with more tattoos, as a general rule. And, of course, bikes. For more than a decade, a shady asphalt lot known as the pit has served as a home for New York City’s #bikepolo enthusiasts. But the origin story of the sport begins in the late 1990s, when, apparently, bored bicycle messengers in Seattle played around with makeshift gear to entertain themselves. Hardcourt bike polo enjoyed rapid growth between 2010 and 2014, when chapters popped up everywhere from Berlin to Buenos Aires. And in recent years, the sport’s governing body has made a bid to go mainstream. The players at the pit, on the Lower East Side, are devoted to the sport. But they’re also just having a good time. “At the end of the day, you rode your bike in circles all day with your friends and had fun,” Clara Flores, 37, who started playing hardcourt bike polo with the New York team 3 years ago, told @pia_peterson. “How many adults our age wouldn’t want to do that?” @theotherchrislee took this photo while on #nytassignment in NYC.
