?“You wore so much of it, tiny pockets of your ghost lingered hours after you were gone.” This summer, we selected 6 #poems by female poets and asked photographers to let the words inspire them. Turn your volume up to hear @nickole.brown read her poem “For My Grandmother’s Perfume, Norell.” (Swipe left to hear parts 2 and 3.) ✨ When the photographer @neeksiebeeks read this poem, “images, scenes and scents came to me in a way that made me want to respond,” she writes. Certain phrases and words stood out — gospel, Stevie Wonder, extensions of nails and lashes — and she felt resistant to others. “The images I conjured from these words” — a breezy fall of bangs, Faye Dunaway and Doris Day — “did not remind me of my normal subjects: black girls and women,” she writes. @neeksiebeeks worked with a group of local teenagers to make this series of photos, which she calls “a bit of a disjointed magical narrative.” While the meaning of the poem didn’t shift as she worked, “I think that in some little way I made it my own,” she writes. “Or maybe I disregarded it, after letting it lead me.” Swipe left, then visit the link in our profile to see more photos inspired by #poetry.
