From @nytmag: “My wife needs help. She has a medical condition. She needs to get airlifted to a hospital. I’ve been trying for 2 days to get here out of here. I really, really, really, really need to get her to a hospital ASAP.” Houston thought it was prepared for a major hurricane like #HurricaneHarvey. But as the flooding overwhelmed the city’s emergency systems, many people found out too late that they were on their own. Wayne Dailey and his family were among them. As the waters rose, Wayne stayed up with his wife Casey, who’d recently had an operation and could not stop vomiting. “Something ain’t right,” Casey said. The next morning, it kept raining, and the muddy water rose to their top step, just below the front door. Casey had finally fallen asleep, and when Wayne checked on her, he found it hard to keep her awake. Around 1:30 in the afternoon, he called 911. It was not a police emergency, so the communications officer transferred the call. “As soon as the fire department is able to make it to this area then you will be evacuated,” Wayne was told. @andrew__burton took this photo of Wayne with his youngest son, Ronnie, in September 2017.
