A highlight of our Asian Art Week auctions in New York, these two 1,300-year-old limestone bodhisattvas represent the height of Tang-dynasty art.

They represent two of the eight great bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism: Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion and Mahasthamaprapta, the bodhisattva of wisdom. Originally, they would have been embellished with brightly coloured pigments of yellow, blue and pink.

In the Buddhist tradition, a bodhisattva is a benevolent being who has attained enlightenment but has postponed entry into nirvana to help others.
