"At Afropunk, everyone can be themselves, and I think that’s beautiful,” says 27-year-old Colombian-Canadian singer @jessiereyez. On the new remix of her anthem “Body Count,” she unapologetically touts her female sexuality alongside collaborators Kehlani and Normani. “It’s about women feeling judged, or not thinking they have the freedom to talk openly about how many people they’ve slept with,” she explains of the track. “My message is: Do you, whether that means loving one person or twenty. Social constructs are bullshit!” Reyez has a similar attitude towards conforming to beauty ideals; she feels her best when she, like her music, is raw and stripped down. “The second you’re not honest with yourself you’ve lost everything,” says Reyez, who often goes bare faced and embraces her unruly curls, piling it on top of her head in an insouciant half-up style to tomboyish effect.
