Inspired by legendary R&B disruptors Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, British singer @Mahalia makes a point of keeping it real, from her endlessly-relatable anthems, such as her groovy new single “I Wish I Missed My Ex,” to the wizardry behind her shape-shifting mane. “I’ve always been really honest about wearing wigs because my audience is young and I don’t want them to just assume it’s all my own,” says the 20-year-old ahead of her Afropunk performance on Sunday. “I’m not doing it because I don’t love my natural hair. I’m doing it for a look—or just because I want to be blonde that day.”
