“I’m inspired by the African idea of Sankofa, which says you have to look back before you look forward,” says @jamilawoods, a Chicago-bred soul singer and poet who boldly buzzed off her halo of curls just days before her performance at this year’s Afropunk Festival. Wrapping up her world tour in support of her debut album HEAVN, she’s embracing her freshly-shorn coif with wearable paper sculptures by Brooklyn-based designer Gregory Gray, who bases his creations off ancient, ethnic headgear. “Afropunk is about about having pride in where you come from, as well as what inspires you now, and feeling free to share that with the world,” says Woods.
