“Either it’s a small world or it’s Africa’s time,” says 26-year-old South African rapper @shomadjozi, who was shocked to find an ultra-hyped crowd chanting along to her tracks during her electrifying debut at Afropunk Festival today. Known for serving up rhymes in her native tongue, Tsonga, Madjozi also pays homage to her roots with neon lavender braids adorned with cowry shells. “I refuse to accept the notion that being beautiful means being completely Western[ized], or that Africans haven’t contributed to global beauty,” she says. “With my hairstyles, I try to imagine what young me growing up in a rural village would have loved to see.”
