Artist Janet Echelman used data from the February 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami to create this larger-than-life sculpture. It’s a 3-D representation of the tsunami’s amplitude as it rippled across the Pacific Ocean. The Biennial of the Americas in Denver wanted a piece that represented the interconnectedness of the 35 nations in the Western hemisphere, and Janet’s imaginative blend of art, engineering, and technology made her the perfect artist for the task. “Fourteen years ago, I searched for beauty in the traditional things, in craft forms. Now I combine them with hi-tech materials and engineering to create voluptuous, billowing forms the scale of buildings,” she says. “My artistic horizons continue to grow.” To see more of @janetechelman’s art, watch her #TEDTalk at go.ted.com/floatingart
