Sculptor Brian Dettmer takes old, outdated encyclopedias and textbooks and turns them into stunning new works of art. For this piece titled “New Books of Knowledge,” he used an X-Acto knife to carve an encyclopedia. He selected only pages with geographical images on them, and the result is a sculpture of a landscape — and a piece of art that examines our relationship to information in the modern world. “I think of my work as almost an archaeology,” Brian says. “I’m excavating and trying to maximize the potential and discover as much as I possibly can.” To learn more, watch his #TEDTalk at go.ted.com/bookart
