Freedom. That’s what Sue Austin felt when she got a power wheelchair after an illness changed the way she could access the world. Some people looked at her altered mobility as a limitation or something to be pitied — responses she initially internalized. But then she decided to challenge that narrative and start creating art that communicates the joy and freedom she feels when she uses her power chair to maneuver through the world. Sue began scuba diving in 2005, using an underwater chair to explore ocean beds and swim through schools of fish. Many people light up when they see photos like this one, and she believes it’s because they open them up to an entirely new way of being. “Instead of focusing on loss or limitation, we see and discover the power and joy of seeing the world from exciting new perspectives,” Sue says. “For me, the wheelchair becomes a vehicle for transformation.” To watch her #TEDTalk, visit go.ted.com/waterchair
