“Photographing the wild horses of the American Southwest is a joy of discovery. I drove 10 hours to central Utah to find the Onaqui Mountain Wild Horse herd. Stallions often spar for dominance, or, as in this case, fight to defend their mares in the band. The stallion facing me was trying to get cozy with one of the mares belonging to “One Ear” (the palomino on the left who has only one ear—his left ear is missing from a fight). The dark area above One-Ear’s right shoulder is dried blood from a gash probably from a bite from another horse. He’s a tough guy! Tragically, the BLM is starting a roundup September 1 of these magnificent wild animals—they will be held in holding pens (imagine that after running free and wild all their lives) and eventually sold off for slaughter—may more people recognize the history and beauty of these magnificent horses and fight for humane management solutions and keep them running wild and free over our nation’s lands.” ? + caption by Richard J.
