“This is a harsh reminder of the negative impact we have on our natural environment and what inhabits it.

We found this Humpback whale logging on the surface with what appeared to be fresh wounds and markings from a severe entanglement. It is unclear if this beautiful cetacean had been helped by humans earlier in the week or if it had managed to escape alone as we were sailing remote waters.

The sub-adult whale was in bad shape and could only dive down a few meters surfacing for air every minute or so displaying little energy.

It was so disheartening to watch this whale. The left pectoral fin showed little (if any) movement. We acquired as much imagery and video as we could in a very short time to ensure we didn’t add too much more stress to it’s journey. Being alone on the surface for such long periods can make this animal more vulnerable to predation from Orca and/or Shark.
