“The Great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) is a true apex predator that has little to fear in the water. Their often bold and confident aura, makes them an easy subject to photograph, as, unlike many sharks, they aren’t afraid of humans. This shark, named Medusa, has been visiting Bimini, Bahamas for at least the last 6 years and in this image you’ll see her showing off her flexibility for my camera. This characteristic is beneficial for hunting her preferred prey, stingrays. Rays often hide under the sand attempting to remain undetected and ultimately avoiding predation from the likes of a great hammerhead. Hammerheads however have many advantages such as a wide angled head smothered in ampullae of lorenzini (electroreceptors), fantastic stereo vision and depth perception meaning these sharks can see in almost 360 degrees, and large surface area to assist with the ‘pinning’ of its prey.
