Photo by @FransLanting A family of elephants made up of females and youngsters is crossing the Luangwa River. The fertile floodplains of Zambia’s Luangwa Valley provide everything elephants need, but the population was hit hard during the previous poaching crisis in the 1970s and 80s. Their numbers plummeted from more than 250,000 to fewer than 18,000 in 1990. Since then they have rebounded slowly, but they are still vulnerable.
