The base of the statue of General P.G.T. Beauregard in New Orleans, unveiled in 1915 to honor the Confederate fighter, and taken down in 2017. The photograph, by @matthew_shain, is part of his series “Post-Monuments" and appears in the new double issue of TIME: "The South Issue." Since 2015, local governments have removed more than 100 #Confederate statues and symbols. On July 25, workers began removing the pedestal.
