Wildfires are raging through seaside resorts near Greece's capital, killing at least 74 people and turning cars and homes into shells, authorities said on July 24. Twenty-six of the dead were believed to be groups of families or friends who were found huddled together, some of them hugging, the Associated Press reports. With the flames whipped up by gale-force winds that frequently changed direction, the AP adds, many tourists and residents fled toward the coastline. In these scenes on Tuesday, burned-out cars are strewn along a road in Mati, east of Athens, and a burned home is seen in the nearby village of Neos Voutzas. Rescue crews continue to search the charred remains for victims, and there are fears the death toll could rise. More than 170 people were treated in hospitals for injuries including burns.
